Getting Set Up
- Download VeilGPT and add it to Chrome or Edge.
- Open any Canvas page. A small camera button appears in the corner.
There is nothing to connect to your Canvas account. VeilGPT reads what is visible on your screen when you press a button, the same way you would read it yourself. The free plan includes 5 snaps a day with full steps.
Assignments and Discussion Prompts
Canvas assignments are often a prompt plus a rubric, or a list of problems on a page. For a page with one question, press the camera button. VeilGPT reads the question and shows the answer in a small black chip. Tap the bulb to see the step-by-step explanation.
For a page with many problems, press Alt+Shift+S to snap a box and drag around the one you are stuck on. This keeps the explanation focused on a single problem instead of the whole page.
For writing prompts and discussion posts, VeilGPT works better as a thinking partner than a writer. Highlight the prompt, right-click and choose Explain with VeilGPT to get a plain-language breakdown of what the question is asking. Then write the response yourself.
Practice Quizzes
Many instructors post ungraded practice quizzes in Canvas so you can check your understanding before a real quiz. These are a good place to use an explainer:
- Try each question on your own first.
- If you miss one, snap it and read the steps to find where your reasoning went off.
- Open the side panel and ask a follow-up, like "what would change if the angle were 60 degrees?" (follow-ups are part of Plus).
- Retake the practice quiz without help to see if it stuck.
Graded quizzes and exams are different. Follow your instructor's rules about outside tools. If the syllabus or quiz instructions say no outside resources, that includes AI tools. VeilGPT never types, fills in or submits answers, but whether you can use it at all on a graded check is your instructor's call.
Readings, Pages and PDFs
Canvas modules often include long readings, lecture slides and PDFs. VeilGPT can help you get through dense material faster without skipping it:
- Highlight a confusing paragraph, right-click and choose Explain with VeilGPT for a simpler version.
- Snap a box around a chart, diagram or worked example in a slide to get it explained.
- Use the side panel's Solve the whole screen for a page of textbook problems, then ask about the ones you got wrong.
Some embedded file viewers behave differently from normal web pages. If the camera button does not appear on a file preview, open the side panel and use Solve the whole screen, or download the file and open it in a new tab. You can also paste text into the web chat.
Using It Well in Canvas Courses
A few habits make the difference between finishing homework and learning from it:
- Attempt first, then snap. Explanations land better when you already know where you got stuck.
- Read the steps, not just the chip. The answer chip is quick, but the bulb is where the learning is.
- Check against your notes. If an explanation uses a method your class did not teach, ask the side panel to solve it the way your course does.
- Keep the rules in view. Homework help is one thing; tests and graded checks follow your instructor's rules.
